After internet interruptions, VPN downloads in Cuba soar

VPN users and privacy software users are increasing in Cuba, as authorities shut down internet access for protesters.

Independent media organization Inventario reported that there have been more than 34,000 downloads of the free VPN-like service than the two weeks prior to the incident. To bypass restrictions, 89,000 Cubans downloaded the software to their devices.

A wave of internet disruptions swept across the country in an attempt to silence protestors on the morning of July 15. The protests began in Pinar Del Rio and spread to Havana. Cubans marched to protest months of fuel, food, and electricity shortages that had been crippling the island.

Internet shutdowns are a growing problem worldwide. Authoritarian governments use them to limit communications, especially during protests and elections. To mitigate these effects and gain access to censored websites like social media, people have learned to use one of the most reliable VPN services. What makes Psiphon so popular?

Psiphon was developed by Citizen Lab researchers in 2007 to support users who live under restricted internet freedom. It is an internet circumvention program that allows users to bypass internet censorship.

It is free and open-source. It combines secure communication with obfuscation technology. To defeat firewalls that other services cannot circumvent, it uses SSL and Web proxy software.

Psiphon diverts web traffic to stop filtering machines from filtering your online activities. It also masks your traffic to make it appear like it is not subject to any restrictions.

It is available for Android, Windows, and iOS. You can download the free version with unlimited bandwidth without registration, but you have a maximum speed limit of 2Mbps. Upgrade to Psiphon Pro monthly for $9.99 or $8.33 per month with the annual plan.

If you’re looking to make some investments, we recommend better affordable VPN services. Surfshark is our #1 choice. This comes down to a $2,30 monthly fee if you sign up for a 2-year plan.

You can also find tons of free VPN applications. Before you make your choice, however, be sure to review our guide. These services can either leak your data or block censored websites. ProtonVPN Free is currently our top choice.
