Rummy Rules

Rummy is a popular card game that is played with two decks of cards with a total of two joker cards. To win a rummy game, the player must make a valid declaration by picking and discarding the appropriate cards from the two given piles. One pile is faced down which means the players cannot see the card they are picking, while the other pile is faced up which is a pile of the cards discarded by the players. To win a rummy game, the players need to have a valid set or sequence of cards. To play the game properly one needs to understand the rummy rules properly, as these rules help the player to enhance their skills and ace the game.

The objective of the rummy game

In a rummy game, the objective is to create a valid sequence or set of the 13 cards. To win the game a player must form at least two sequences, out of which one has to be a pure sequence while the other can be any form of valid set or sequence. Without a pure sequence, a player cannot make a valid declaration, which is also one of the most important rules of the game.

How to form a sequence

A sequence is a combination of three or more cards that are consecutive and belong to the same suit. Sequences can be broadly classified into two types- pure sequence and impure sequence. If you want to win the game of rummy you need to have at least one pure sequence in your hand.

  1. Pure sequence: A pure sequence is a group of three or more cards of the same suit, in a consecutive order. To form a pure sequence in a rummy card game, a player cannot use any Joker or wild card.
  2. Impure sequence: An impure sequence is a group of three or more cards of the same suit with one or more Joker cards used.

How to form sets

A set is a combination of three or more cards of the same value but each card belonging to a different suit. When a player is forming sets, they can also use the wild cards as well as the joker card.
